Welcome to our Positive Leadership Retreat to Costa Rica!

GOOD Travel is proud to have partnered with the University for Peace Centre for Executive Education and JenTex Training & Consulting to offer you this unique retreat in Costa Rica. This retreat will combine Positive Leadership workshops at the University for Peace (UPEACE) with opportunities to connect with the people and environment of Costa Rica. UPEACE was established in 1980 as a Treaty Organisation by the United Nations General Assembly. Your workshops will be led by renowned facilitators from the University for Peace Centre for Executive Education specialised in delivering transformational educational experiences that inspire participants to have a positive impact in our increasingly interconnected world.

Location: San Jose and Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

Details & Itinerary

Sunday: Arrival

On arrival into San Jose, you will be met by a representative from the University for Peace and taken to your accommodation to relax after your journey. In the evening, we’ll have a welcome dinner.

Monday: Positive Leadership Programme

The day will begin with a welcome meeting where you'll be provided with an overview of the programme. After a tour of the university campus and a hike to the Peace Monument, we'll begin our workshops to explore topics including:

  • What is well-being? (PERMA)
  • Reflecting on leadership and well-being
  • Reframing failure
  • Focusing on Purpose

Tuesday: Positive Leadership Programme

The morning's workshops will focus on character strengths and apprciate inquiry. In the afternoon, we'll explore using Circles as a leadership tool. We'll cover the following topics:

  • Applying Appreciative Inquiry
  • Character strengths & flow
  • Understanding your conflict style
  • Managing energy, not time
  • Convening spaces for dialogue
  • 'When should we use circles?'
  • Formulating questions and role-playing conflict scenarios

We'll celebrate our completion of the positive leadership workshops with a visit to the Feria Verde organic market for dinner.

Wednesday: Non-profit organisation visit

Today we will visit Boy With A Ball, an inspiring non-profit organisation that empowers the community from within, teaching English in poor neighborhoods, strengthening youth leadership, and running ‘learning camp’ programs for low income children. We will receive a talk about the organisation, talk to youth in the program, and walk around this community in transition.

We will then drive to Manuel Antonio (about 3 hours total) and check into our hotel.

Thursday - Friday: Pura Vida days

Manuel Antonio national park and the neighbouring town of Quepos are major tourist destinations in Costa Rica. We'll have two free days together where you can go on a hike/walk in the national park, set up a ziplining tour or spend the day lounging on the beach. Note that activities during your Pura Vida days will be at an additional cost.

On the Friday evening, we'll celebrate with a closing dinner together as a group.

Saturday: Departure day

Farewell Costa Rica!

Note: Depending on the timing of your flight home, we may return to San Jose on the Friday afternoon or go straight to the airport on Saturday.

What's GOOD about this trip?

This trip has been developed in partnership with the United Nations-mandated University for Peace (UPEACE) in San Jose. UPEACE was established in 1980 as a Treaty Organisation by the United Nations General Assembly. Located within the University for Peace, the University for Peace Centre for Executive Education was created in 2007 to offer a platform for students to engage with the University for Peace. Over the past 10 years, the Centre has worked with leaders from around the world to offer transformational educational experiences that inspire participants to have a positive impact in our increasingly interconnected world.

UPEACE has developed strong partnerships within their community, including with an inspiring non-profit organisation called Boy With a Ball. You will have the opportunity to visit this organisation during the trip and we will also support you with fundraising for the organisation prior to arrival in Costa Rica if you wish to.

Your two-day Positive Leadership workshop will be led by a variety of renowned facilitators from the University for Peace Centre for Executive Education. Over the past 10 years, the Centre has worked with leaders from around the world to offer transformational educational experiences that inspire participants to have a positive impact in our increasingly interconnected world.You can read more about the university here.and the Centre here.

Dawn Shedrick

Dawn Shedrick is the Founder and Chief Learning Officer of JenTex Training & Consulting. She is a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in providing experiences where human services professionals develop new skills and enhance existing ones; connect with new colleagues AND connect with the passion that fuels their noble work. Dawn first joined a GOOD Travel trip to Fiji in 2015 and has since partnered with GOOD Travel to develop a variety of different retreats.

What's included

Your retreat package includes the following:

  • Positive Leadership workshops, site visits and academic materials
  • A certificate from the United Nations-mandated UPEACE Centre for Executive Education
  • Six nights accommodation in twin rooms in 3-star accommodation (sharing with one other participant from the group)
  • Airport pick-up and drop-off in San Jose - one transfer will be provided for the group so if you arrive at a different time to the group, you will need to cover your own cost for this
  • All transport to activities included in the itinerary
  • A welcome dinner and farewell dinner
  • All breakfasts and three lunches
  • 24/7 support in-country from UPEACE and JenTex Training & Consulting
  • 6-month membership to the GOOD Travel Community including access to travel product and trip discounts

Please note that the following are not included and are your responsibility to arrange:

  • International flights to San Jose, Costa Rica
  • International health and travel insurance (required)
  • Visa for Costa Rica (if required)
  • Meals and transportation to/from meals that are not included in the itinerary
  • Expenses during ‘Pura Vida’ days and other incidental expenses
  • Snacks, beverages, souvenirs
