Kiribati is one of the least visited countries in the world. It is a beautiful country with wonderful people, but it has an uncertain future. Kiribati is one of the first countries to feel the direct effects of climate change and many believe the islands will be uninhabitable in the next 50 years. This trip offers an amazing opportunity to connect with the people and culture of Kiribati and to learn about why investing in sexual and reproductive health is important in climate change adaptation strategies.
Kiribati is not a typical Pacific island holiday destination. This trip is designed for adventurous travellers - not tourists seeking a relaxing holiday.
Location: Kiribati is a remote island nation in the central Pacific Ocean. To reach Kiribati from New Zealand, you must first fly to Nadi and spend the night in Fiji. You must then fly a further three hours to Tarawa, Kiribati. There are only two flights per week to Kiribati, so this trip has been planned around the available flights.
Climate: The weather in Kiribati is hot and humid. Temperatures are consistently around 30-32 C although it does cool down a little at night. The combination of high temperatures and high humidity mean that you will sweat a lot! There is air-conditioning at our accommodation (assuming there are no power cuts) but there is no air-conditioning at the Kiribati Family Health Association.
Swimming: It is not safe to swim in South Tarawa due to pollution. However, we will be able to swim on the Sunday in North Tarawa.
Food: Kiribati is a remote, low-lying island nation. As a result, little fruit and vegetables can be grown on the island and they are rarely imported. You should expect lots of root crops, rice, noodles and fish.
Language: The Kiribati language is challenging to learn but we really recommend learning at least a few greetings prior to our trip. We will provide you with a basic Kiribati language guide to assist you with this.
Culture: As visitors to Kiirbati it is important that we respect the local culture and way of life. We will provide you with information to read about this prior to our trip and as a group we will need to prepare a short Waiata and performance while we are in Fiji to share during our welcome event at the Kiribati Family Health Association.
Vaccinations: You will need to visit a travel doctor prior to travelling to Kiribati to ensure you have all the necessary vaccinations and medicines for this trip.
Please note this is a draft itinerary only and some activities may change.
Wednesday: On our arrival in Fiji, we will be transferred to our accommodation for a short welcome meeting followed by an early night.
Thursday: We will depart Fiji early for our flight to Kiribati. On arrival in Kiribati, we will be transferred to our accommodation. In the afternoon, we will visit the Kiribati Family Health Association (KFHA) for our official welcome.
Friday: We will spend the morning at KFHA’s clinic talking with different staff members and learning about their work. In the afternoon, we will have the opportunity to observe KFHA in action! We will attend one of KFHA’s health promotion events and join in with a condom distribution.
Saturday: We will visit one of KFHA’s mobile clinics, stop by the Kiribati Handicrafts Association to learn some basic weaving techniques and see the World War II relics. In the evening, we’ll attend a special event organised for us by the Kiribati Youth Initiative Association.
Sunday: After a short trip across the lagoon by canoe, we will arrive in beautiful Abatao! We’ll spend the day relaxing with a local family and experiencing life in a traditional Kiribati village.
Monday: We’ll return to Fiji in time for a delicious farewell dinner and debrief at a local restaurant. We’ll spend the night at a hotel near to the airport.
Tuesday: Return to New Zealand. Alternatively, if you wish to stay in Fiji for a few days, please let GOOD Travel know and we can help you arrange this if you wish.
This trip has been designed to ensure that the people of Kiribati benefit from your visit. You will be staying in locally owned accommodation throughout your stay and all your activities will be led by I-Kiribati. Your trip will be carbon-offset through CarbonFund.org and we will work to minimise our impact on the environment throughout our stay. Your biggest contribution will be through the funds you raise to support the work of the Kiribati Family Health Association and Family Planning.
The trip will be led by Eliza Raymond from GOOD Travel. In addition, staff from the Kiribati Family Health Association will be involved in every aspect of the trip once you arrive in Kiribati.
